From the judges: The way Simon Fraser University was able to pivot in such a short amount of time is remarkable and very well-executed. This was an excellent example of how to pivot something virtually and still maintain a feel of community. Additionally, the approach with this group was thought-out and targeted, as they catered to the possible needs and desires through impressive tech support and training to constituents beforehand through a clear event format.

Title of Entry: SFU Charter & Early Years 55th Anniversary Virtual Reunion
About this Entry: In 2020, Simon Fraser University (SFU) celebrates its 55th anniversary since the university opened its doors in the fall of 1965. In recognition of this significant milestone an in-person reunion was planned for the summer of 2020 for its charter (founding) and early years alumni, former staff and faculty. However, with the current restrictions around COVID-19 and uncertainty around travel and the inability to hold large gatherings – a virtual reunion was held instead. With two months to pivot from an in-person to an online event, the task was risky and monumental. With hard work, innovation, and an expanded team of collaborators, we were able to deliver a retro-themed event, complete with a virtual campus tour and breakout sessions with fun university and 60’s related topics for mingling. The reunion successfully brought together alumni and former staff and faculty to virtually re-connect, receive updates on the exciting changes and developments and to celebrate our 55th anniversary.
