From the judges: This is a very strong entry. We liked the creativity of the cover, where type follows topographic lines and conceptually advances the theme of “Blaze your own trial.” The publication was clearly written and designed to appeal to the out-of-state student, and it is successful at appealing to this audience through amazing photography that evokes a sense of adventure while also showcasing the academic side of the Montana State experience. The design, the graphics, and the writing are all strong. An excellent piece.

Title of Entry: Think Outside: An Insider’s Guide to Montana State University
About this Entry: Think Outside: An Insider’s Guide to Montana State University is Montana State University’s viewbook. This publication is the primary, comprehensive introduction to the university for prospective students from all over the U.S.
Montana State University is located in Bozeman, in a largely rural state that has a population of about 1 million and a decades-long decline in the number of high school graduates. To complicate student recruitment, there are two flagship universities in the state (one being MSU), as well as 14 other smaller universities and colleges — all vying for the diminishing pool of the state’s graduates. In order to thrive, and thereby increase the educational opportunities for Montana students, MSU has looked to out-of-state students in order to grow. The objective of the viewbook is to appeal to those out-of-state students while maintaining a connection with Montana students. The viewbook tells the MSU story in an authentic way, capturing the ever-evolving vitality and sophistication of Bozeman, along with the pristine nature of the state.
