From the judges: This well-designed, new orientation website filled with engaging videos and vital information for new students and their families featured content from more than 60 academic and campus services departments. The WWU 2020 Anthem video is phenomenal, and the message of inclusion felt authentic and from the heart. The sample of remote classes was a brilliant way to reassure students and show them that they could do it. Western Washington University raised the bar for virtual student orientations during COVID-19, and could continue using this website to supplement their in-person orientations in the future. All of this in two weeks, with zero additional budget...wow!

Title of Entry: News Student Orientation
About this Entry: In response to COVID-19, WWU’s New Student Services/Family Outreach office made significant structural changes to the delivery of our orientation and advising programs. The abrupt pivot to delivering information, services, and events online was both daunting and opportunity-bearing. Our mission is to support new students and families in their personal, social, and academic transition to the University. A critical component of the successful virtual transition was the rapid development of a new Orientation website, providing an easy-to-navigate, comprehensive dashboard for events and resources. Orientation goals are to Foster Connections, Demonstrate Commitment to Student Success, and Inspire Confidence. The website featured “to-do” lists, FAQ’s, pre-recorded videos from academic and campus service departments, live events, meaningful welcome messages, and an exciting, fast-paced “anthem” video to celebrate community. The website also provided early and broad access to information and services, meeting additional equity and inclusion goals by equalizing access to resources for those students and families who previously may not have had time or funding to attend in person.
